The Best of Pulp Fiction

Guns, blood, drugs, and violence. What more can you ask from Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece Pulp Fiction? Released in 1994, Pulp Fiction is a crime drama that starred John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Samuel L. Jackson. Boasting a mix of humor and violence presented through Tarantino’s trademark non-linear style, Pulp Fiction won several awards and was a big commercial success.

The plot begins when Pumpkin (Tim Roth) and Honey Bunny (Amanda Plummer) are in a diner, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of bank robbing. They then stood up and robbed the diner instead. Throughout the movie, the audience is bombarded with gory and violent scenes in which director Quentin Tarantino is known for. The plot is divided into seven sub-narratives. Both the prologue and epilogue are shot at the diner. According to Tarantino, breaking a film’s linear structure makes it more captivating. The audience somehow “chases” a film with a non-linear structure in order to keep up with the events. Along with plenty of homages to other flicks and pastiche, Tarantino was indeed successful in hooking the audiences through Pulp Fiction.

Despite being an indie film, Pulp Fiction was able to earn a domestic gross revenue of $107.9 million. As an influential cinematic piece, Pulp Fiction is a cult flick that opened the doors for other movies that seem to glorify violence and drugs. To solidify the movie’s cult status, Pulp Fiction was hailed as the 94th movie in the American Film Institute’s 100 Best American Movies list.

If Pulp Fiction is your all-time favorite flick, then a movie shirt depicting John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, and a big old gun should be part of your collection. A white shirt with a black-and-white image of the two main characters set against a colorful background, this retro movie shirt captures the best of Pulp Fiction.

Stuck in a dead-end job? Then Office Space is the perfect movie for you. A masterpiece by Mike Judge, Office Space is full of witty and sarcastic dialogue that made it a cult flick. The story behind Office Space revolved around Peter Gibbons (portrayed by Ron Livingston) and his increasing disappointment with his dead-end job. Due to a series of unusual events, however, Peter Gibbons was able to transfer to a more fulfilling job in the construction industry.

Office Space wasn’t a box office hit but it is definitely a classic cult flick that reflected common themes and issues among generic employees and office workers. As a result, the movie introduced unforgettable lines, jargons, and stereotyped characters in the workplace. As a proof of the movie’s cult flick status, several jargons have actually entered real-life office environments. Such jargons include “TPS report” which refers to pointless paperworks, the phrase “a case of the Mondays,” and “pieces of flair” which refers to worthless trinkets worn by Joanna (Jennifer Aniston) as a job requirement. Several commercials and TV shows have also made references to Office Space due to the movie’s cultural impact.

Having a Very Nice Time with Borat

For a movie that’ll let you temporarily forget your problems, Borat is probably a good choice. Brimming with hilarious slapstick comedy and wacky scenes that’ll make you cringe with embarrassment, Borat is an original and revolutionary comedy flick. A unique mockumentary of a reporter from Kazakhstan, Borat explores America by “unintentionally” offending innocent citizens through his hilariously rude Kazakhstani way.

The character Borat originally appeared in the Comedy Nation although still unnamed. With the success of Cohen’s other alter-ego — Ali G, Cohen brought Borat back into character.

Between the scene wherein Borat mangles the national anthem and the unforgettable “fight scene” wherein Borat wrestles with his overweight sidekick while wearing nothing, this movie definitely deserves all the attention.

Through this movie, Borat was able to create a unique satire about stereotypes and common prejudices that many Americans have towards other cultures. To fully enjoy this movie, you have to look beyond Borat’s funny accent, broken English, and bad toilet habits. Many of the scenes and dialogues may seem offending but when you look at the movie in a deeper way, you will see the reality behind prejudices and cultural stereotypes. Borat’s character aimed to point out ridiculous prejudices and cultural stereotypes that have shaped the American culture. Unfortunately, his method of pointing out such prejudices through a mockumentary raised not only eyebrows but also touched the nerves of several organizations and cultural groups. Despite lawsuits and complaints from various groups however, Borat was very successful in his goal.

To make the movie-watching experience more memorable, don on a movie shirt depicting Borat while carrying his bag and a miniature American flag. While wearing the “very nice” movie shirt, reminisce all those wacky scenes, that mind-boggling fight scene between Borat and his loyal sidekick, and hilarious dialogues that made Borat a one-of-a-kind character.

Platoon: The Darker Side of Humanity

A war flick that starred Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger, Keith David, Kevin Dillon, Johnny Depp, and John C. McGinley, Platoon is based on the Vietnam War. A masterpiece by Oliver Stone, this war movie was his answer to The Green Berets, another war flick by John Wayne. Due to the movie’s stunning portrayal of the effects of war on the psyche of soldiers and the moral ambiguity as a result of warfare, Platoon earned several Academy Awards — Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Director.

The plot involved a group of soldiers belonging to different squads who were assigned to the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam. Throughout the movie, the audience is exposed to the horrors of war and the violence inflicted not only by the Viet Cong but also by some American soldiers. The release of this film in 1986 was very apt. During the eighties, the general attitude towards veterans of the Vietnam war has softened.

To solidify the movie’s status as an influential cinematic piece, Platoon was hailed by the American Film Institute as the 86th flick in its 100 Best American Movies list.

If you’re into movie trivia, Platoon was actually shot in Luzon, Philippines during the time of then President Ferdinand Marcos. A scheduled film production was almost canceled due to the political tension between Ferdinand Marcos and his political opponents. Fortunately, the scheduled shoot was not canceled because a well-renowned producer in Asia helped out.

If you love Oliver Stone movies or you’re a die-hard fan of Platoon, a movie shirt depicting Charlie Sheen’s war helmet is the best accessory for you. In this movie shirt, Charlie Sheen’s helmet is placed upside-down above the film’s title. The helmet actually reads “When I die, bury me upside-down, so the world can kiss my ****.”

Killing Time with Reservoir Dogs

If you can’t get enough of violent movie scenes mixed with profanity, then Reservoir Dogs is definitely a good option. A movie by Quentin Tarantino, Reservoir Dogs was actually his debut flick as a director. This movie introduced Tarantino’s style as an auteur — homages to other films and pop culture, violent scenes, unforgettable dialogue, profanity, and a non-linear movie structure.

The story behind Reservoir Dogs revolved around a group of criminals who botched up a jewelry store heist. The film was praised for its ensemble cast starring Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel, Chris Penn, Michael Madsen, Lawrence Tierney, and Steve Buscemi. As a director/ actor, Tarantino also had a role in the movie — Mr. Brown. An interesting feature that made this film unforgettable is the fact that the actual jewelry store heist was never shown. The entire film revolved around the events before and after the heist, reflecting Tarantino’s use of non-linear structure. The initial reason why the actual heist was never shown was budget constraints. However, Tarantino really liked the idea of not showing the actual heist that it became a unique feature of Reservoir Dogs.

In its first week in the U.S., Reservoir Dogs earned $147,839. The movie became popular after the success of Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. As a cult flick, Reservoir Dogs influenced other movies that glorify violence, gory scenes, drugs, and profanity. As a collection of homages to various films and pop culture references, Reservoir Dogs showcases scenes from Ringo Lam’s City on Fire.

Aside from having a DVD copy of this flick, a movie shirt that features an unforgettable scene from Reservoir Dogs is a must-have. Set against a plain gray background, the black-and-white image of the iconic Mexican standoff between two members of the ensemble cast stands out. Also a perfect gift for Tarantino fans.

Zombies Attack in The Dawn of the Dead

Want a movie that will guarantee a nightmare? Then Zack Snyder’s remake of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead is the perfect before-bedtime flick. Brimming with flesh-eating zombies and gory scenes, this horror flick will make you stay on the edge of your seat throughout the entire movie.

The plot starts when a nurse goes home after a long shift at the local hospital. The following scenes are probably some of the most memorable ones, making Dawn of the Dead one of the most decent zombie flicks ever made. The story continues as the nurse (portrayed by Sarah Polley) and fellow survivors seek refuge in a mall. Blood-splattering, flesh-eating, and gun-shooting scenes make the flick a worthwhile watch. At the end of the movie, the viewers are left with a hanging question — will the survivors make it?

The Dawn of the Dead remake received mixed reviews from audiences and critics. However, Zack Snyder’s version was able to gain commercial success. This flick is actually one of the few zombie movies that were able to earn more than $100 million at the international box office.

Compared to George A. Romero’s original masterpiece, this remake definitely had more aggressive zombies. The flesh-eating zombies in the 2004 Dawn of the Dead are reminiscent of the zombies in 28 Days, a British horror flick that featured humans consumed by the rage virus.

If you want to reminisce all those flesh-eating scenes with blood-curling images of zombies pursuing their victims, then grab a movie shirt that features a green-glowing logo of Dawn of the Dead. Complete with an image of a half-decaying zombie’s head, this movie shirt is definitely an eerie addition to your wardrobe. Also a perfect gift for Zack Snyder fans and for those who can’t get enough of zombie flicks.
