Guns, blood, drugs, and violence. What more can you ask from Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece Pulp Fiction? Released in 1994, Pulp Fiction is a crime drama that starred John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Samuel L. Jackson. Boasting a mix of humor and violence presented through Tarantino’s trademark non-linear style, Pulp Fiction won several awards and was a big commercial success.
The plot begins when Pumpkin (Tim Roth) and Honey Bunny (Amanda Plummer) are in a diner, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of bank robbing. They then stood up and robbed the diner instead. Throughout the movie, the audience is bombarded with gory and violent scenes in which director Quentin Tarantino is known for. The plot is divided into seven sub-narratives. Both the prologue and epilogue are shot at the diner. According to Tarantino, breaking a film’s linear structure makes it more captivating. The audience somehow “chases” a film with a non-linear structure in order to keep up with the events. Along with plenty of homages to other flicks and pastiche, Tarantino was indeed successful in hooking the audiences through Pulp Fiction.
Despite being an indie film, Pulp Fiction was able to earn a domestic gross revenue of $107.9 million. As an influential cinematic piece, Pulp Fiction is a cult flick that opened the doors for other movies that seem to glorify violence and drugs. To solidify the movie’s cult status, Pulp Fiction was hailed as the 94th movie in the American Film Institute’s 100 Best American Movies list.
